You can make brief voice notes using the enclosed scripts. Bind the record button to the script named record (obviously) after which one press starts recording and another stops it. The results can then be played in Voicenote. It expects to find the script play in the path. You may need to edit the options for sox in the scripts if they don't work with your kernel, they've been tested with 2.4.3-rmk2-np1 (familiar 0.4). The notes are saved in /tmp/voice (ram) and not compressed so keep them short.
